Here is a message from Coach Brenda:

Hello, Olde Georgetowne Swim Team!

I am very excited to become part of the OG family. With Swim Team signups just around the corner, I want to introduce myself quickly. I am a lifelong swimmer, starting with summer league and age group swimming as a child and continuing to swim for East Carolina University. My swimming adventures continue as a Master's Swimmer and Open Water FINA Swimmer. I have coached swimming at every level, from beginner to advanced. I've also taught every age group from babies to the elderly. My complete biography is available at my web site: http://wateroakaquatics.com/. I am an American Swim Coaches Association Level 1 and 2 and am currently working on level 3. I am both Safe Sport and Lifeguard certified.

Next, I want to tell you a little about my coaching philosophy. First and foremost, swimming should bring joy and fun to your life. Yes, there are skills to learn, speed to develop, and competitions to win. I want to create an environment where every swimmer is a student of the sport. Every time we enter the pool, it is an opportunity to learn something new, sometimes about swimming and sometimes about ourselves. The goal of each new season is to learn more and to swim faster than the year before. Winning will be the result of learning new skills.

To create this environment of learning, I will need help. I understand the long history of OG swimmers becoming assistant coaches, and I would like to continue this tradition. I plan to do so and expand the program further to include swimming mentors. Several swimmers have already reached out to me, and I look forward to meeting with them in the next few weeks. If you are a senior member of OG and would like to be involved as an assistant or mentor, please let me know.

I have offered Stroke Clinics in the past in other parts of Charlotte to help non-year around swimmers get a jump start on their High school or summer seasons. This year, I am offering Stroke Clinics at the Fairmeadows Swim Club down the road from Old Georgetown for our swimmers to get to know me and learn new skills. I cut the cost of these clinics to $10 each so that as many OG kids as possible can participate. Clinics are also an opportunity for our assistants and mentors to learn how to teach mechanics in a stroke progression.

I use a modified Swim American philosophy to teach stroke progressions. This means the skills taught are the same for a 5-year-old as for a 15-year-old. They will not necessarily do a skill the same, but all ages will learn the same elements of the skill. For example, a dive has 5 basic elements, and all ages will learn all 5 of these. These elements are:

  1. Head down position.
  1. The entry of hands, then head, then body, and then feet into one hole in the water.
  1. Streamline body position.
  1. Explosive push off with the legs.
  1. Underwater kick.

These 5 skills are in every dive, whether it's a 3-year-old doing a sitting dive to the best Olympic swimmer. Teaching in this method allows us to create an environment where every swimmer can help every other swimmer.

I look forward to this summer season and cannot wait to meet you all.
